A recent leak could provide new details regarding the company’s hardware roadmap.

A new report from The Verge claims that Meta intends on releasing three additional VR headsets over the next several years. This includes a direct follow-up to Quest 2 as well as the more recent Quest Pro mixed reality headset.

Citing an internal roadmap presentation shared with Meta employees, the report states that a Quest 3 VR headset is scheduled for release later this year. The device will reportedly be twice as thin as the Quest 2 and “at least” twice as powerful.

Front-facing cameras will supposedly offer additional mixed reality support as well as a new “smart guardian” feature. In terms of pricing, the device will apparently cost just slightly more than the $399 Quest 2. According to Rabkin, the headset will feature 41 new games and apps at launch, including various mixed reality experiences.

“The main north star for the team was from the moment you put on this headset, the mixed reality has to make it feel better, easier, more natural,” said Mark Rabkin, Meta’s vice president for VR, according to The Verge. “You can walk effortlessly through your house knowing you can see perfectly well. You can put anchors and things on your desktop. You can take your coffee. You can stay in there much longer.”

The Verge report states the Meta will follow up Quest 3 with the release of a more “accessible” headset in 2024, codenamed “Ventura.” The company will then shift focus to “La Jolla,” a more advanced headset with support for photorealistic, codec avatars, followed by the release of its augmented reality (AR) glasses sometime in 2027.

“We want to make it higher resolution for work use and really nail work, text and things like that,” said Rabkin about La Jolla. “We want to take a lot of the comfort things from Quest Pro and how it sits on your head and the split architecture and bring that in for comfort.”

According to the report, the main focus of the company at the moment is user engagement. Rabkin stressed the importance of making it easier for users to share VR content on other platforms as well as a more “dynamic” Quest store.
