TORONTO – The Black Academy’s inaugural Legacy Awards will include performances by Deborah Cox, Jully Black, and Kardinal Offishall.
The 90-minute telecast will air live on CBC, and CBC Gem on Sept. 25 honouring both Black rising stars and established talents in film, music, TV and popular culture.
Actors Shamier Anderson and Stephan James will host the show, The Black Academy announced on Thursday.
Anderson and James, who are brothers, co-founded a non-profit called B.L.A.C.K — Building a Legacy in Acting, Cinema and Knowledge — which aims to create more opportunities for young and diverse artists in Canada.
The Black Academy, an extension of the organization, is putting on the awards show at History entertainment venue in Toronto. In May, the group announced a three-year deal with the CBC to air the telecast.
Among the newly announced presenters are former governor general Michaelle Jean, media personalities Brandon Gonez, Kathleen Newman-Bremang, Amanda Paris, Odario Williams, and actor King Bach.
Showrunner David F. Mewa says the celebration is “a labour of love” and that Canadians will be inspired by what they see.
A complete list of performers, award recipients, presenters and public ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
