LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.— Microsoft Corp.’s top videogame executive said the company is betting heavily on the future of mobile games and hopes that it will be able to overcome the power that Apple Inc. and Google have over how people play on smartphones.

Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s chief executive of gaming, said the company’s ambition in mobile games is the main driver of its proposed $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc., a plan that is being reviewed by competition regulators.
