Fortnite Update Teases Potential VR Support For Quest

You may soon be able to dab in VR.

The absurdly popular battle royale game Fortnite may receive official VR support for Meta Quest headsets, according to HYPEX, a well-known Fortnite leaker with a solid track record. References to the Meta Quest and Meta Quest 2 were supposedly found in the latest update for the game’s third season.

If true, this would be a major win for Meta. Fortnite currently attracts an impressive 2.5 to 4 million players a day across all platforms. Introducing a player base this large to the Quest would only further position the company’s lineup of standalone VR devices as the go-to for mainstream consumers.

As for whether or not Epic can get the game up and running using Quest hardware is another matter altogether. The Quest 2 is somewhat limited by its Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor. That said, Fortnite is currently available on iOS and Android devices, so the idea of the game running on standalone VR headsets isn’t absurd.

It’s also worth pointing out that Epic this year secured $2B from Sony Group Corporation and KIRKBI towards the development of its metaverse platforms.

“Epic Games is known for building playful and creative experiences and empowering creators large and small,” said Søren Thorup Sørensen, CEO of KIRKBI. “A proportion of our investments is focused on trends we believe will impact the future world that we and our children will live in.”

This investment will accelerate our engagement in the world of digital play, and we are pleased to be investing in Epic Games to support their continued growth journey, with a long-term focus toward the future metaverse.”
